Positive Induction Birth Experiences
If you’ve made the decision to be induced, you’ve probably heard your fair share of negative birth experiences, we have a terrible habit of sharing our negative stories more than our positive. I asked some local mums to share some of their positive experiences with you from Aberdeen Maternity Hospital to help inspire you.
I found all the staff were lovely {Nicole}
“I was only 37 weeks pregnant but due to my ill health was induced. I had a very positive experience. Only needed the pessary in for 24hrs and then I was ready to go to the labour ward. We had a 5 hr wait to get to the labour ward and got in at 2am. My husband could have stayed the night with me while we waited for the labour ward but I sent him home so he could have some rest. Got my waters broken and drip in by 4am and my son was born at 9.45am. All the midwives were great and I was home the next day. I needed to be monitored all the time but my midwife managed to prop me up so I was not lying flat on my back. All in all was a positive experience. I found all the staff were lovely.”

I love labour!

I’ve been induced 3 times for medical reasons at 37w at Aberdeen. Each time they told me it would take ages because it was so early. But I did lots of things suggested to help: visualisation, bouncing, squats, nipple stimulation, sex, reflexology points. All three of mine were quick, with no complications. I must have walked every corridor, stair and outside path a thousand times day and night to keep the pressure on! The midwives I encountered were largely supportive and one was amazing, telling us about the birth and things as it was happening as we are very interested and I love labour! I was quite adamant about not being monitored continuously and my consultant wrote in my notes that I didn’t want it as I wanted to be free to move.

I didn’t feel any pressure in either instance to do anything that I didn’t feel comfortable with {Claire}
I was induced with both my sons, the second time I was induced, all I needed was the pessary and things moved along well after that. When I needed the drip I was able to move around lots until more assistance was needed and the 2nd time when no drip was required I was only on the bed when I wanted to start pushing. The midwives were excellent and I didn’t feel any pressure in either instance to do anything that I didn’t feel comfortable with. My labours were treated as “normal” just slightly sped up.

It was a really positive birth experience where I was given choices and felt really well supported

I was induced at 10 days past my ‘due date’ as a result of raised blood pressure. The induction process went smoothly, after getting the pessary I went for a walk around the grounds of the hospital and things really started quickly. I used hypnobirthing techniques and the birth ball lots, they really helped me focus and relax. Later I had the drip to and used gas and air along with hypnobirthing. The midwife was wonderful helping me into positions I felt best in, on the ball, standing leaning over the bed and kneeling on the bed with the head rest raised to lean on. My wee boy was born on the labour ward and we had 3 hours undisturbed skin to skin afterwards, it was a really positive birth experience where I was given choices and felt really well supported.
